Morning Devotions

For our morning devotions this morning we talked about some of the different names of God.

I AM your Rock

I AM your Advocate

I AM your Creator

I AM your Comforter

We each went around and shared what name of God we see Him as the most. It was a very insightful discussion. My husband and oldest son choose HOPE (but for different reasons). The future is uncertain for a teenage boy looking at colleges and career choices. The future holds great anticipation for Leu as he is an optimist and loves to create and invent. Mollie felt drawn to God as a Counselor. She tends to holds her hurts inside and runs to the everlasting arms of God when she feels wounded. After pouring her heart out to Him she feels loved and hugged by her Lord...I love that! Gabe said God really comforts him when he feels sick or sad. And me, He is so Faithful and True. This name of God for me reminds me of Deuterononmy 4:9

“Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children—

God is unchanging, constant, a promise keeper, and true to His Word. When the circumstances in front of me look hazy and scary, remembering that He has always been faithful and true and He will continue to be faithful and true in my future delights my heart and soothes my worries. Now that's good news!

If you haven't tried them, you must!

I bought these sheets for my hubby for Christmas and we have waved good-bye to getting into cold sheets this winter. They are soft and fuzzy and warm! I love them and am never turning back. They are not like flannel or t-shirt sheets (which I am on the t-shirt bandwagon for sure). It's almost like a stuffed animal feel.
And they are called fleece, which has nothing to do with sheep except for the counting of them while you drift off into dreamland but now you have no need for the little lambs because you are reveling in your coziness. Need I say more??

Festive Frolicking

As usual, we kick off the holiday's with my birthday celebration. This year a bunch of us went to Chopstix for dinner and then off to the movies to see Sherlock Holmes. We had a wonderful time eating sushi and laughing and enjoying an evening with dear friends.

For Christmas dinner my Sissy served up a yummy meal for my side of the family.

After that came the marathon light ride with my brother, parents and the Clay's.
The next evening we went to the Vogel's for a mexican feast and some friendly, highly competitve game playing (Michelle and I kicked the boyz buttz!).

It looks innocent enough, but the competitve edge is palatable.

The next evening we went to the Lankford's for dinner and games with the Webb's (no pictures for that one). We played a game called Snigget, it's like the opposite of Baldardash except the word is made up...I REALLY wanted the word and definition to be real and true. I lost, bad!

Then on the next night my cousin Kelly had a Christmas party at THE party house! They have all the latest and greatest techno toys on the market.

This is his happy face! Smartest kid on the planet, look for him in future science magazines!

We celebrated New Year's Eve with our friends. I have to say it was a lovely gathering. Leui led us in a devotional and then we sang worship songs and had some prayer time. What a great way to bring in the New Year!

A Merry Christmas

We had a full house Christmas morning. I haven't yet recovered from all the festivities. I am determined to catch up on the scrapbooking part of my blog because there are other things I want to do. We had out-of-town family in and out this week. Christmas morning 8 a.m. sharp, eleven of us gathered around for morning devotions and a birthday cake for Jesus.

Toby found his ginormous bone with the help of Mollie assisting for some knashing...

What could it be a bullet-proof vest...no, it's a cross country riding vest. Think of two pieces of particle board to smash yourself between to make a comfy sandwich.

My sister-in-law came to stay overnight to join the festivities...pretty in pink!!

He KNOWS what's in this box. He sniffed it out like a hound dog on a fox hunt.

We officially have a Charles Dickens character living under our roof complete with...TOP HAT!

A Study in Ephesians

I am joining an e-study with Good Morning Girls starting on January 15th. The study is Monday thru Thrusday and runs until mid April. It's a chance to group together with other women and share what God is teaching you through His mighty Word. My friend Wendy has done one of these studies before and writes: When I found Good Morning Girls online, I was looking for a Bible Study that fit with mommyhood, and that encouraged me to faithfulness through accountability. It is not an online study, but an online accountability group. The book of Ephesians will be divided into 12 weeks, with a daily portion that you will write out in a journal, make observations (using notes and commentaries of your own), find applications, and pray/meditate about daily. The week is laid out as Mon-Thurs to study, and Friday to review the week. Then you would post to a closed Yahoo group that I would set up about what you are learning and any prayer requests. I did this study in the fall on I John and I loved how much I was able to learn by doing a slow study. The accountability was awesome too!

Avocado-Corn Relish

We went over to sup with our youth pastor a few weeks ago and they served this fantastic appetizer. It is my new favorite thing to make. I personally have made it a half-a-dozen times since then and people are asking for the recipe. I have adapted it a bit from the original...

Recipe Avocado-Corn Relish
1/4 cup of lime juice
1 T red wine vinegar
1 T olive oil
1 1/2 t salt
1/2 t pepper
3/4 t cayenne
1 bag of frozen corn
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1/3 cup diced red onion
1/2 cup cilantro, minced
3-4 avocados

Whisk first 6 ingredients together. Pour over corn, peppers, onion and cilantro. Let sit for 1 hour (or overnight is fine too). Add avocado right before serving.

Serve with tortilla chips. I have also put this on burgers, grilled chicken or fish. It's so yummy. Needs to be eaten up because the avocados turn brown the next day.

NCCS Theater Fall 2011

THE BOOR. Written in 1888, captures the essense of Russian comedy. Anton Chekhov, a superb Russian writer, penned The Boor in a single afternoon. Filling it to the brim with situational irony and subtle shifts of power from one character to the other. The play addresses the problem of hierarchy and differences between masculine and feminine roles.

Bailey played Popov and did her character justice with widow mood flare and bravery.

Smirnov was filled with wild energy and tenacity.

The Pretentious Young Ladies. This comedy captures man's sinfulness when left to his own desires. The pain and arrogance of the main characters had us rolling.

The Stronger. This unique one-act has one actress with a speaking role. The lead, Jenna, had to memorize a 15 minute dialogue, that is hard to do!! The other actress fills her role with a myriad of facial expressions, also a most rigorous challenge!

Directors gathered on stage after the performance to take questions from the audience about the process of directing their first play.

Mrs. Vass has been instrumental in the growth of our drama team. She lends her expertise graciously and allows our students to make decisions. We will miss her greatly!

Bumps in the road, you bet! What a great learning experience to pull together a production. Luckily, these upper classman enjoy each other and work well together. Hats off to you all!

As my teenagers grow their friendships become sudo important to them. I prayed for years for the Lord to bless Douglas with a 'Jonathan' in his life.

Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the Lord." 1 Samuel 20:42

A true friend to journey with who loves and serves the Lord, one who has your back, one who will speak truth into your life. The Lord in His infinite goodness has blessed my son with not one but several buddies who walk along side of him. I am grateful. I too enjoy having these hurkey boys around the house. They are so sweet and helpful! Climb up on the roof to put up Christmas lights, you bet. "Hey, can I help do anything in the kitchen to get ready for supper?" Sit and chat, yes, yes, yes! What a joy!

Junior Ring Ceremony

My junior received his class ring. He did not want a tradition high school ring (who's surprised?).

Douglas is faithful to play the piano at Chapel every Wednesday. The Headmaster said he is not going to graduate him so that he can continue to keep playing for chapel as well as most school events. What a gift! We all kind of take it for granted that Doug will play, and one day he will be in college and boy are we going to miss him and his music! I am happy to report that his younger brother is now playing during memory period at the grammer school so hopefully the legacy will carry on. I am so proud of my boys serving the Lord with their gifts and talents.

The Gift of Giving

The spotlight is on my Gabanator again. He collected 56 quarters to fit inside of that M&M container. Those 56 quarters will be sent to Global Aid Network to then feed 56 children a nutritious meal. It took him a few weeks to gather them but he perserved and was able to give a true life-giving gift. Small hands can contribute and make a difference. Way to go Gabe!

Maestro'

I think it was mid July when Doug started thinking about directing the choir at school. "What should we do for Christmas?" he asked me. No visions of sugar plums dancing in his head but what music should be chosen for this years choir which was now going to have girls and guys...big addition! He started pouring through music and you tube for ideas. Talk about being jazzed about something, this is kid is made for this!

He is still teaching piano students along with directing the choir, juggling several honors classses, directing the play at school, and taking his own piano lessons at the conservatory. 'Keep em busy!' my pastor's wife says.

The girls along side of him are part of the team for getting the choir to run smoothly.

This was their first performance at the Country Club. They sang O Danny Boy, and Holy, Holy, Holy. They sounded wonderful!

Turkey Day

Down on the farm the family gathered for the holiday. We ate...A LOT!!

Doug picked up the melodica for the first time and played it just like the piano, it has a quiet, soft sound.

My favorite line from the weekend...Mollie and Lindsey were playing Bananagrams and Mollie asked, "How do you spell the word 'join', is it oi or io?" Aunt Conway very patiently explained (twice) that it's i before e except after c. The look on Mollie's face was priceless.

Pudding Cake

Simply, moist, and delicious! I love making quick desserts that don't require alot of ingredients!

Ingredients:

1 pkg Butter Cake Mix
1 (3.4 oz) pkg vanilla instant pudding and pie filling
4 large eggs
1 cup water
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1/2 bag chocolate chips
confectioners' sugar, for garnish

Preheat oven to 350ºF. Grease and flour 10-inch Bundt® pan.
Combine cake mix, pudding mix, eggs, water and oil in large mixing bowl. Beat at medium speed with electric mixer for 2 minutes. Stir in chips. Pour into prepared pan.
Bake 50 to 60 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan 25 minutes.
Invert onto serving plate. Cool completely. Dust with confectioners', sugar if desired.

William Tyndale could speak seven languages and was proficient in ancient Hebrew and Greek. He was a priest whose intellectual gifts and disciplined life could have taken him a long way in the church—had he not had one compulsion: to teach English men and women the good news of justification by faith. He was singularly sold out for Christ and the Gospel.

Tyndale was a theologian and scholar who translated the Bible into an early form of Modern English. He was the first person to take advantage of Gutenberg’s movable-type press for the purpose of printing the scriptures in the English language. Besides translating the Bible, Tyndale also held and published views which were considered heretical, first by the Catholic Church, and later by the Church of England which was established by Henry VIII. His Bible translation also included notes and commentary promoting these views. Tyndale's translation was banned by the authorities, and Tyndale himself was burned at the stake in 1536, at the instigation of agents of Henry VIII and the Anglican Church.

Learning church history has been a thrill as my eyes have been opened to the men who have paved the way for us today. The King James bible celebrates it's 400th birthday this year! Our church commemorated this event with a buffet and evening of learning our church history and a concert from students from the Peabody Institute singing Reformation hymns. It was just delightful!

" The Room.."

In that place between wakefulness and dreams, I found myself in the room. There were no distinguishing features except for the one wall covered with small index card files. They were like the ones in libraries that list titles by author or subject in alphabetical order. But these files, which stretched from floor to ceiling and seemingly endless in either direction, had very different headings.

As I drew near the wall of files, the first to catch my attention was one that read "Girls I have liked." I opened it and began flipping through the cards. I quickly shut it, shocked to realize that I recognized the names written on each one. And then without being told, I knew exactly where I was. This lifeless room with its small files was a crude catalog system for my life. Here were written the actions of my every moment, big and small, in a detail my memory couldn't match. A sense of wonder and curiosity, coupled with horror, stirred within me as I began randomly opening files and exploring their content. Some brought joy and sweet memories; others a sense of shame and regret so intense that I would look over my shoulder to see if anyone was watching.

A file named "Friends" was next to one marked "Friends I have betrayed." The titles ranged from the mundane to the outright weird. "Books I Have Read," "Lies I Have Told," "Comfort I have Given," "Jokes I Have Laughed at."

Some were almost hilarious in their exactness: "Things I've yelled at my brothers." Others I couldn't laugh at: "Things I Have Done in My Anger", "Things I Have Muttered Under My Breath at My Parents." I never ceased to be surprised by the contents Often there were many more cards than expected. Sometimes fewer than I hoped. I was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the life I had lived.

Could it be possible that I had the time in my years to fill each of these thousands or even millions of cards? But each card confirmed this truth. Each was written in my own handwriting. Each signed with my signature.

When I pulled out the file marked "TV Shows I have watched," I realized the files grew to contain their contents. The cards were packed tightly, and yet after two or three yards, I hadn't found the end of the file. I shut it, shamed, not so much by the quality of shows but more by the vast time I knew that file represented.

When I came to a file marked "Lustful Thoughts," I felt a chill run through my body. I pulled the file out only an inch, not willing to test its size, and drew out a card. I shuddered at its detailed content. I felt sick to think that such a moment had been recorded. An almost animal rage broke on me.

One thought dominated my mind: No one must ever see these cards! No one must ever see this room! I have to destroy them!" In insane frenzy I yanked the file out. Its size didn't matter now. I had to empty it and burn the cards...

But as I took it at one end and began pounding it on the floor, I could not dislodge a single card. I became desperate and pulled out a card, only to find it as strong as steel when I tried to tear it. Defeated and utterly helpless, I returned the file to its slot. Leaning my forehead against the wall, I let out a long, self-pitying sigh

And then I saw it. The title bore "People I Have Shared the Gospel With." The handle was brighter than those around it, newer, almost unused. I pulled on its handle and a small box not more than three inches long fell into my hands. I could count the cards it contained on one hand.

And then the tears came. I began to weep. Sobs so deep that they hurt. They started in my stomach and shook through me. I fell on my knees and cried. I cried out of shame, from the overwhelming shame of it all. The rows of file shelves swirled in my tear-filled eyes. No one must ever, ever know of this room.. I must lock it up and hide the key. But then as I pushed away the tears, I saw Him.

No, please not Him. Not here. Oh, anyone but Jesus. I watched helplessly as He began to open the files and read the cards. I couldn't bear to watch His response. And in the moments I could bring myself to look at His face, I saw a sorrow deeper than my own. He seemed to intuitively go to the worst boxes.

Why did He have to read every one? Finally He turned and looked at me from across the room.. He looked at me with pity in His eyes. But this was a pity that didn't anger me. I dropped my head, covered my face with my hands and began to cry again. He walked over and put His arm around me. He could have said so many things. But He didn't say a word. He just cried with me.

Then He got up and walked back to the wall of files.. Starting at one end of the room, He took out a file and, one by one, began to sign His name over mine on each card. "No!" I shouted rushing to Him. All I could find to say was "No, no," as I pulled the card from Him... His name shouldn't be on these cards. But there it was, written in red so rich, so dark, and so alive.

The name of Jesus covered mine. It was written with His blood. He gently took the card back He smiled a sad smile and began to sign the cards. I don't think I'll ever understand how He did it so quickly, but the next instant it seemed I heard Him close the last file and walk back to my side. He placed His hand on my shoulder and said, "It is finished."

I stood up, and He led me out of the room. There was no lock on its door. There were still cards to be written.

"But I say to you that for every idle word men speak, they will give an account of it in the day of judgement." Matthew 12:36

My "People I shared the gospel with" file just got bigger, how about yours?

We have been taking our kids to Weber's Farm since they were wee. Now that they are bigger than me, I thought I could squeeze just one more year out of them to go to one of ~~our~~ my favorite places. The eldest child opted out but the youngest and my best girl (she knows how to have fun wherever she goes) went with me.

I never realized that picking out the right pumpkin is akin to selecting the right Christmas tree. Weber's has the yummiest, warm cider doughnuts and caramel apples on this side of the Appalacian Mountains!

Psalm 90:12 in God's word says, "Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom." I do number our days as I watch my children grow up. These are the days of transitions. Capture the moments given and tuck them away in your heart was what I kept thinking about today. Time goes by so quickly, treasure one another.

Making the Most of a College Fair

The journey has officially begun. Last night we went to our first college fair. Representatives from each college were ready to engage in dialogue about their institution and inform you of your options. There are some really exciting schools out there...but which one do you choose?

I did a bit a research before we went so we could be a little prepared. These are a compilation of the thoughts and questions we discussed:

Come prepared with questions!
How many students take that major?
What kind of research faculty members are involved in and are there any opportunities for undergraduates to participate in them?
What courses you would take your first year in a particular major.
What does the college look for in transcripts vs. SAT scores?
Do we need to audition or have a portfolio?
Are there extracurricular activities in my interests?
What do the graduates go on to do after graduation?

Mapping out a strategy!
Before you leave for the fair, make sure you have the following supplies: a small notebook with your list of colleges and questions you want to ask; a pen or pencil; and a backpack to hold all the college pamphlets you'll be collecting.
Students with access to computers may wish to print up a few sheets of self-stick address labels. Include your name, address, phone number, e-mail address, high school, year of graduation, intended major, and any extracurricular activities you're interested in. At the fair, slap the address labels on the college info cards to save time and energy.

A director of admissions at a California College advice was first for the student to take a self-inventory and make a list of all the things they know about themselves. Start with the obvious: What do you like to do? What do you hate to do? What subjects (academic or not) make you sit up and take notice? What totally bores you? What are you good (or not-so-good) at? How do you learn best-by listening, discussing, reading, doing? Do you enjoy being part of a large group, or do smaller groups suit you better? Do you seek out diversity among your friends, or would you rather hang out with people that are very similar to you? Are you more comfortable in the city or in a rural or suburban environment? Do you want to stick close to home or move far away? Is there a particular geographical area you're most interested in?
Search for colleges that have the characteristics that line up with your inventory list. Visit internet college sites and talk with the guidance counselor. The goal at this point is to put together a list of 15 to 20 colleges that look promising. They should be colleges where you realistically have a shot at getting accepted.

The process is overwhelming. After speaking to many college reps, there were some offering full scholarships and ALL of them stressed beginning your senior year with a firm choice because that's when there is the most money for scholarships. Doug was invited to come tour the campuses which is a great idea because there is an ideal shaped up in your mind and actually seeing the campus can obviously tip the scales. When we were chatting beforehand I asked Doug what he envisioned a college campus to look like. He described it as somewhat small, old historic buildings in a quiet setting. So that is a good barometer for where his comfort level is. Manhattan is probably not the place for him! Funny that one of the places, Eastern University, had a huge display picture of their campus. It was like someone took a snapshot of our discussion.

The gal shared with us that in the basement of this old building they found manuscripts from Beethoven and Mozart.

There are webinars that will walk you through questions we have as parents; financial aid, choosing the right college, choosing a major and so and so. Talking with other parents with children in college is a great way to learn as well. Basically, you have to jump in and get your feet wet to start learning the lay of the land. It's a big world out there!

It's hard to hold gifts on your non-existing lap. This was a gift from relatives up north who couldn't make it. Thought I would pop a picture of Katie opening their gift of a college fund piggie bank...crazy to think about how much it will be when this fellow graduates!

Global Aid Network

Instead of class at school today we invested in a service project for one of our class field trips. We went to the Global Aid Network to participate in a worldwide outreach.

Global Aid Network is a mutli-national network of ministries serving to demonstrate the love of God, through word and deed, to hurting and needy people around the world through relief and development projects.

As the relief and development aid arm of Campus Crusade for Christ International, the ministry of Global Aid Network spans the globe helping to meet physical needs in areas of poverty and despair and providing hope through evangelistic outreach. This cart is used for handicapped people to get mobile!

Clean water, we take it for granted here in the states. We have nothing to complain about! Imagine getting your water in this manner.

This dear lady showed us how to make the salvation message bracelet.

Our teacher shared after we returned home, "We had a wonderful experience making bracelets which are used to share the gospel with children and adults around the world. One leader told us that they are even used with government officials sometimes – I guess a handmade bracelet along with the gospel message is more appreciated in other cultures! We also packed school supplies to send to children in Guatemala. Another leader told us that when she visited Guatemala she asked why so many children were not in school. She was told that children have to supply their own school items and if they do not have them they cannot attend. These pens, pencils and rulers that we packed today will be used by children who literally would not have an education without them. We are so blessed and what a privilege it is to be able to be a part of serving others in this way."

Hands are my second favorite thing to photograph or sketch or behold. Hands that have loved, served, and worked diligently are a masterpiece!

Somehow making the bracelets became a competition. Everyone was counting their piles.

After making bracelets we went into the big warehouse to restock boxes with school supplies.

Give Them Grace

What would things look like if Satan really took control of a city? Over half a century ago, Presbyterian minister Donald Grey Barnhouse offered his own scenario in his weekly sermon that was also broadcast nationwide on CBS radio. Barnhouse speculated that if Satan took over Philadelphia (the city where he pastored), all of the bars would be closed, pornography banished, and pristine streets would be filled with tidy pedestrians who smiled at each other. There would be no swearing. The children would say, "Yes, sir" and "No ma'am," and the churches would be full every Sunday...where Christ is not preached.

I have started reading this book by Fitzpatrick & Thompson about being much more concerned about teaching our children grace than teaching them to be 'good.' Now that I have been a parent for over 16 years I have read a ton of books, taking umpteen parenting classes and there are a few golden nuggets that if I could turn back the hands of time and have a redo this is one of the books I would say is a keeper!

School's in Full Swing

We are off and running with the new school semester. Two in high school and one in elementary...how did this happen, weren't they just in diapers?? For the first time all three of my children are in school full-time. My 4th grader came home and asked, "Mom, what do you do all day?" "I lament and cry and console myself by staring at your picture all day until you come home darling." (I didn't say this out loud mind you). Actually, I have been enjoying my full days of being a family manager! Sometimes I don't sit down at all or eat lunch, I am just busy being about the work at hand.

He really needs two bookbags with all the books he carries back and forth! He is House Captain for Augustine House, directing choir, teaching piano, directing drama and taking physics, calculus, honors lit. and history, and writing a 15 page junior thesis this year. He has got his focus on!

Girlfriend is sporting that Peggy Sue look. After being homeschooled for all of middle school (thank you very much!) she has jumped into freshman year with a vengeance. Getting A+ in everything it feels real good to know that all our hard work at home has blossomed into equipping her for these rigorous academics. She is still teaching riding lessons on the weekends and is involved in drama and choir as well. She loves her worldview class and is doing some WIKI/blog stuff in literature.

My handsome Gabinator is growing in leaps and bounds. This year they have changed the focus to study skills and reading at home instead of the traditional homework fill-in-the-worksheet things we have been doing for a coon's age. I have to say teaching study skills has been a fruit of the spirit engagement! Self-control and perseverance have been exercised on both our parts. It is a huge leap from 3rd grade to 4th grade. New applications are tapping into his brain that are stretching him. He is doing great! He is playing soccer and practicing piano too.

I have lived out that little Norman Rockwell part of me that dreamed of warm muffins for breakfast to send them off to school and gooey chocolate chip cookies from the oven welcoming them home. That glass cake dish has had some homemade yummy treat in it since school started and I just delight in keeping it full. Besides filling my garage with purging projects and de-cluttering one area at a time (no hurry mind you) I am blessed and content to care for my family and home. I have been trying to write one encouraging snail mail card a week and preparing for Sunday meals with family and friends. Maybe I will venture out and have lunch with a friend one of these days, or sit down and read, or paint my toes but for now...those 6 hours fly by in a flash!

A Sunny Gathering Place

This is the back of the house to the French Country post. Pryor to beginning the project (can't find the before pictures) the floors were carpet and tile. There was a half-wall dividing the kitchen and family room. Cabinets were pine and counter tops were formica. The only things that stayed put were the light fixtures and the stove and fridge. Her colors were hunter green and burgundy...bye-bye!!!

The new chosen color scheme yellow, lime, and crimson. Painted furniture and cabinets. New hardwood floors throughout the entire space. We widen the wall between the kitchen and family room and took out the half wall too. With this palette the room is bright and cheery.

The television armoire was the focal point in the room and we chose a light yellow finish with a soft glaze. Beautiful crown molding was added throughout the space. I love the yellow panels trimmed in our green gingham fabric.

Dragonfly fabric on the chairs and ottoman that surround the fireplace. Choosing the green paint was a challenge. Because of the nature of paint + lighting it can cast different shades depending on the time of day and the amount of light cast on that particular wall.

I love the baskets under the table lined with the sweet yellow floral stripe. Custom throw pillows bring in a third fabric and compliments the sofa beautifully.

We designed this chair a'la french flare. It beckons you to sit and stay awhile!

It's hard to get a good photo of a huge picture window. The mantel was decorated with a large flower pot of geraniums and some round picture frames on easels and candles and book. This was the arrangement we put on her coffee table. A green picket fence tray with some pretties.

A sweet little nook in the kitchen is filled with a half-round table, an antique pitcher with ivy, petite round mirrors on the wall hung on ivory ribbons complete this ensemble.

Somewhere I will find the original kitchen pictures. But this is the cru de gras of the first floor. Ivory cabinetry that extends to the ceiling, warm colored granite, and oil-rubbed bronze hardware. What a great place to gather around!

This was a new kitchen window design we used. Very soft and delicate pattern.

We made the french door window treatments similar to the kitchen window except we took out the soft gather and made a pleat instead.

This french bistro baker's rack is a great piece of furniture to tuck away wine bottles and this one has drawer's to hold placemats. The oil rubbed bronze metal adds some depth to the ivory cabinets everywhere else in the kitchen. What a sunny gathering place!

Murder Mystery Dinner Party

It's my main squeeze's birthday tomorrow. Sometimes I come up with clever ideas for a party. For instance, one year we had an ice-cream tasting party. I covered all the pints with paper and wrote numbers on them. Everyone had a taste and had to write down what flavor they thought it tasted like. Did the surprise party for his 40th. When the big 5-0 came, I threw a murder mystery dinner party with our dearest of friends. It was an absolute hoot of an evening. We laughed until our checks hurt and ate until our buttons were popping!

The theme was a beauty pagaent gone south. Who done it quest of an evening. All the girls wore tiara's and evening gowns and the gents dressed up in their smoking jackets (some were non-smoking!)

I am plum out of ideas at the moment for tomorrow. I asked several times for requests...as it stands right now, we are rading the cuisine at the new Wegman's and having a get together Friday night.

A True Fairy Tale...

Now, some people think the Bible is a book of rules, telling you what you should and shouldn't do. The Bible certainly does have some rules in it. They show you how life works best. But the Bible isn't mainly about you and what you should be doing. It's about God and what he has done. Other people think the Bible is a book of heroes, showing you people you should copy. The Bible does have some heroes in it, but...most of the people in the Bible aren't heroes at all. They make some big mistakes (sometimes on purpose), they get afraid and run away. At times they are downright mean. No, the Bible isn't a book of rules, or a book of heroes. The Bible is most of all a Story. It's an adventure story about a young Hero who comes from a far country to win back his lost treasure. It's a love story about a brave Prince who leaves his palace, his throne-everything-to rescue to the ones he loves. It's like the most wonderful of fairy tales that has come true in real life.

Harvest Arrangements

We get all different kinds of clients and job requests. Sometimes it's a one time deal where we have a consultation and brain storm with someone who wants to decorated themselves but needs a jump off point. Depending on a client's budget will dictate what can actually be accomplished. This gal wanted her dining room pulled together. She entertained a lot but could not seem to get the room to flow. This dining room was graced with a fireplace and was rather spacious. All the furniture, curtains, and lighting was existing so we just came in for the accesories and some rearranging. Pulling two chairs away from the table and placing them along the fireplace made for an intimate sitting area. These photos were of the fall decorations.

Harvest time is such a welcoming motif to stylize any room. Her colors were a warm gold and blue. We mixed things she had plus what we brought to the space, some pumpkins, a berry twig, some decorative stackable suitcases (which give height and interest) and candles.

A custom wreath was made for her space because the fireplace was tall it did not leave a lot of wall space above the mantel. A pretty lamp (some forward thinking arcitect put in an outlet...thank you very much!), some gourds and wheat bundles with harvest corn.

Enjoy all the pretty pieces that come straight from the handy-work of God's creation...He makes the best stuff afterall!

Book Bums

God answers prayer in the most unexpected ways sometimes. I have been praying all year about our finances and how we were going to meet this tuition payment for private school. Months went by. Over the years of homeschooling I would sell my educational materials online and replace them with the next batch of necessary curriculum. BUT I am not homeschooling anymore. This is my first time to have all three children in school for a full day after 16 years...WOWZERS, definitely a new chapter in my life. One day as I was posting all this material online I started to go through our own bookshelves to get rid of books we had outgrown mentally or spiritually. And the books sold and sold and sold. Light-bulb moment! This selling books gig was a breeze for me. First of all, I love books! I want to be a librarian when I grow up! Second, my graduate work in college was literature-based so I have a bit a background knowledge on authors and materials. My prayer was answered! Matthew 6:33 says, "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

I started scouting yard sales and the local library for used books. It has spawned new bookshelves, another gift from the Lord. My sister emailed me about her office getting a new filing system and they needed to get rid of their old cabinets...ding ding ding!!! I have enjoyed pouring through all kinds of material. I found a gal selling over 500 books she needed to unload after cleaning out her fathers house. That was quite an undertaking, but I was up for the challenge. That is just how God works, when we seek Him first and wait (sigh) for His direction He comes up with the best fitting plan imaginable!

The journey of going through 500+ books from another persons life was a thoughtful experience. I learned a lot about someone I will never meet. His interests, hobbies, and beliefs were all right there before me. He must of had an aquarium, was interested in martial arts, coins, cocktails, and wars. He liked poetry and lottery tickets (lots of those shoved between the pages of random books). He had lots of bibles, books on the saints, and other spiritual seeking books. Our home libraries reveal a lot about who we are. It got me looking at my own shelves of books to see what different genres line them.

"And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books."

There are books that are life giving and challenge you to grow. There are books that teach you how to do something. There are books that tell a story, some with a moral some with questionable themes. There are books that tell the story of someone's life and there are books that reveal things about you!

Bathe my soul in rich consolations of thy resurrection life...

(From Valley of Vision Victory prayer)

This is where I go to sit with the Lord. This peaceful little isle is the perfect place to be still and know that He is. I came here the other day to have a good cry. My little heart has been very troubled over a broken relationship for some time now and mix in some added pressures of life and well, I need a place to go and sit and think. No phones, no dogs, no interuptions, just the sound of the waterfall coaxing me to lean on the everlasting arms of the Living Water. Scripture is written on the benches, Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah speaks deeply to my soul. Earlier in the chapter he says, "He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength." Something supernatural happens when we get alone with the Lord. After pouring out my heart and reflecting on His truth, I sing. Out loud. The bible says to praise Him! Later in Isaiah he states, "Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old, behold, I will do a new thing." That is a promise. That is our hope. I believe God will do a new thing like only He can. Jesus was resurrected from the dead. He lives! May His glory shine itself on my concerns and be not in vain. Our risen Lord can surely do a new thing with my yoke.

I like it here at the pondering pond. I like the visual of the rocks that are rough and jagged everywhere EXCEPT for where the water is running over it. And it didn't happen instantly. Time plus moving water created those graceful lines in those old stones. That same Living Water smooths out my rough edges, it washes over me, cooling me, refreshing me. That is the power of the Living God. I came teary and weary. I left renewed and calmed. So I sing to the King!

French Country

My favorite word from any client is "YES". Yes to trim, beads, and tassels...that means fun to me! We have been working on this clients house for 2 years. We did the front rooms last year and we are just finishing up the back of the house. I finally took some pictures of her rooms.

This is the nook in the foyer. It has high ceilings and a turned staircase. Lighting is important in all spaces and this demilune is perfect for holding a lamp and some sweet photos!

The landing on the stairs needed a topiary and a clock for keeping on time!

Since the foyer was open there is a very large empty wall to contend with. We filled the space with a french bistro picture and 2 ivy sconces. The chandelier light...ooo la la, it framed the window beautifully!

The powder room is right off the foyer. We found a lovely vanity that looks like a piece of furniture with a granite top. It is hard to get a good shot of a powder room, one of the client's friends came over and said, "It looks like a museum in here." I love the bay leaf topiary on the side of the sink.

The formal living room is ultra plush. The curved sofa has a soft chenille fabric in deep russet and gold colors. The double padded chairs picked up the olive green and red motif. The walls had been painted when they moved in so we did not change the color, we simply worked with the existing choice. She refinished her oak floors but we deepened the stain to give it a more updated look.

One of our favorite things to do is to make a reading corner. A chair and some soft lighting beckons the reader. We like to use personal photos of the family so to put the clients finger print on what we are putting together. Photos are copied in a sepia tone as to not pull from the color scheme of the room.

The panels were ready-mades that we found to keep the budget intact. We bought an extra panel to make faux shades and of course added some pretty beads. This is a very elegant room but not to the point where you don't feel comfortable sitting in it, in fact, it invites you to relax and enjoy the oasis.

The dining room adjoins the the living room. Here we added a rug with a pattern and fringe. The existing furniture stayed put and we added a beautiful chandelier and lots of accessories.

Filling in the hutch was one of the many requests on our to-do list. Complimentory plates and some other pretties filled the shelves. Pictures and greenery on the walls as well as the buffet table that you can't see in this photo swept everything together. This project turned out really sweet!

Memorial Day

Our summer bookends started at the beach and ended at the beach. I asked my clan how they would like to spend the last Saturday of their summer and they unanimously said BEACH! So we piled in the car and off we went! Our friends were already there so it was an added bonus to our day!

Summer Menagerie

The lazy hazy days of summer have slipped by once again. Thank goodness for my camera to capture all these wonderful moments that filled our days. Friends, family, nature, and blessings abound.

One of my favorite times of the day is when Leui and I would meet for coffee and devotionals on the front porch. He is so sweet to surprise me with little flower clippings from around our yard accompanied by a strong cup of java.

This moth was HUGE! And friendly!

Hands down Mr. Gabriel enjoyed our pool more than anyone in our house. The mask and snorkel he got for his birthday was the best $20 I ever spent!

I bought a box of Aunt Anne's pretzel mix. You know the pretzels that hypnotises you in the mall. Today we decided to make a batch.

It was oowie and gooey, perfect for a 9 year old boy! Then you have to wait and let it rise, a lesson of patience for said 9 yr old.

After dividing the batter (math skills are necessary) you roll out the dough a yard long and an 1" thick. Twist, then dunk it into a chemistry bowl of sodium bicarbonate and water then bake. After they come out of the oven you need to decide salt or cinnamon sugar...

Spending time together is precious and I love making these Norman Rockwell moments but after creating these treats I think it's a beautiful thing that the mall has these curb side and ready to go (that can be a family event too)!

Hurricane Party

An apropos game to play as the lights went out right after dinner.

Hurricane Irene was on the way so we decided to gather some friends to anticipate her arrival. Our house is one that gets excited about weather and natural happenings. Some people get scared, worried, even nonplussed but we all have a sense of delight, awe, and wonderment when our great God does something to move the earth (like a few days earlier). We love snowstorms, hail, and yes, the earthquake too.

We munched and talked and played a board game, but mostly talked.

Glow bands come in really handy when the electricity goes out. Someone wisely commented that just the electricity went out, we still had our source of power, true power that is from Christ!

Sleepovers all around. We got the big boys...they come in handy too, to move big, heavy generators!

I couldn't be more embarrassed by my neighbor right now. He has the nerve to make 3 different signs to complain about having no electricity. We are on day 5 now and a projected 3 more to go before they get to us. They are a couple of trees lying across the power lines so until they get removed...

What is a right response to this man? I know what my first reaction is, but it is not the right one. One of my kids wanted to make a sign that said, 'thank you BGE for all your hard work.' But I am not letting said child do that!

ZIP, ROCK, ICE, AND FLASH

Our itinerary changed with tropical Emily heading to St. Thomas, which was our destination. Our captain thought it best to head to Mexico instead...puking or sunshine...yep let's go with the sun! We had 2 days on the sea to play on the big big boat. Zipline first! What's Gabe looking down at you ask?

The zipline is 7 stories above the boardwalk below. It criss-crosses over the ship.

This is me having a panic attack. I was fine until they put the helmet on my head and flipped the visor over my face, me no like! So I calmly asked the nice man to unhook hook me NOW! He tried his best to coax me into soaring across the air but the heartbeat drumming in my ears prevented the pep-talk from working.

We saw the musical Hairspray which was phenomenal.

The flow rider was Gabe's favorite activity on the boat. It is a man-made wave pumping upward that you boogie board or surf (depending on your skill level) upon.

You want me to do what?...spin and flip...oookkk...

Our next stop was Costa Maya. It was a warm tropical day.

We lounged in the huge pool and whiled away the hours...

Rainbow

We ate at the Chops Grille tonight. Unforgettable meal! Then went to see the Flying Oasis. This is sort of like the Circus Olay. Performers were literally flying around the auditorium, disappearing into the ceiling and below the stage.

I liked dressing up for dinner. I could really get used to that! Some gorgeous meals awaits us while we refresh ourselves for the evening. I'm liking it!

We said good-night to monkey after a fun day of play. The next day was just as filled with activities. One of our favorite spots was the whirlpool that extended over the side of the ship and was enclosed in glass. Warm and bubbly and very relaxing. This was the Alice in Wonderland chair..a tad bit over-sized, that or Doug shrank! 3D movies, diving shows, flash mob dance lessons, ice skating, rock wall climbing, putt-putt, aqua theatre, karaoke, yoga class, the list went on and on.

Our cruise director was a hoot. Mollie and I were part of the flash mob at one of the parades. Douglas's fingers were itching to find a piano to play. The piano guy at the Schooner actually shared the piano with him one evening.

I know I am forgetting a ton of things. We had a fun, restful time. We snorkeled and kayaked at Cozumel, Doug bid his straw hat farewell on the open seas, we laughed until our sides hurt one night playing cards in the game room while my brother told the story of one of his clients with tourettes, napping on this huge wicker lounge chair in the middle of the afternoon, and bubble and squeak. It was fantastic, smashing, and amazing!

Bahama Mama

Our first scheduled stop was the Bahamas. It was a warm carribean day and we hired a bahamian tour guide to take us around the island and show us the highlights.

Our first stop was to Fort Fincastle. Reached by climbing the Queen's Staircase, this fort was constructed in 1793 by Lord Dunmore, the royal governor. You can take an elevator ride to the top and walk on the observation floor (water tower and lighthouse) for a panoramic view of the harbor. The tower is New Providence's highest point. This fort's so-called bow is patterned like a Mississippi paddle-wheel steamer; it was built to defend Nassau against a possible invasion, though no shot was ever fired.

Carribean colors, ya mon.

Carved out of limestone by slave labor in the 1790s, these 65 steps are one of Nassau's most popular attractions. The stairs were later renamed for Queen Victoria to commemorate her 65 years of rule ending in 1901.

Grafitti along the road. Some fun facts: a gallon of milk costs $8.00, a new car costs 85% tax to bring it onto the island plus the cost of the car, cha-ching! Their tax system is very different then ours.

This is the high-end district of the island. Bahamians like to fence everything in to denote spacial boundaries.

Colors are bright and vibrant from houses to water, it all speaks of our artistic God!

Everyone was chattering about Atlantis. Gotta go see Atlantis. So we did. Um, I am not into gambling thank you very much!

Some weird bull mermaid thing. In gold. Pointy horns...very tacky.

There were two formal nights on the ship. Blurry shots, whaaaaa.

Will you look at all these glasses! This is the kind of deal where the headwaiter greets you by name. Then your watier comes over and places the linen napkin in you lap. Then the wine steward shows you the wine list. Then the associate waiter brings you a basket of fresh baked breads to choose from. Then the bar dude shows up, my o my! These people work on the ship for 6 months at a time. They go home for 10 weeks and back to the boat again.

Spoiled I tell ya. After playing all day and feasting all night you return to your cabin to a turned down bed with a chocolate on the pillow and some towel creature to bid you good-nite! I will post more tomorrow.

Oasis of the Seas, All Aboard

Never having been on the high seas before, we found ourselves on the biggest cruise ship in the world. Venturing to the carribean islands while aboard the floating complex was extraordinary! I can soundly affirm that it takes only 7 days to become completely spoiled.

Get your passport out and keep it out. They want to make sure you don't morph into some illegal alien while making your way through the maze of ramps to get onto the ship.

I know, we really played up the tourist part. Boarding the ship and taking it all in is a ride for your five senses. It is sort of like Disney and New York all wrapped up in a dazzling package.

The main level is the called the Promanade. The water fountain looks like lazer lights, this particular place is where the floating bar would elevate from one floor level to the next.

I really truly wanted matching slippers to go with this glass staircase. Cinderella...

Enter Central Park to find high end restaurants, art galleries, and a green house.

Because it is so darn easy to get mixed up on the ship...aft, port, starboard, yada yada yada (I am so good with directions inately), that a very thoughtful engineer thought of me and put these touch screens all over the boat so you could see where you were, figure out where you want to go, and if you wanted to go someplace in particular it informed you if there was a wait and how many people were presently occupying that area. HA!

I did not have my big camera with me so some of my pics didn't turn out so great. As you enter the glass elevator the floor tells you the day of the week. Not because we are stupid, but because you enter a time warp when your tootsies board the boat. No longer do you have any sense of time, except for your stomach that tells you EXACTLY when it is time to eat. Oh and did we eat the MOST BEAUTIFUL FOOD I HAVE EVER TASTED!!! Nice piggie toes Sissy!

These glowing little boat models were helpful in orienting yourself as well.

Our state room was cozy. We were on the 12th floor and had a balcony. There were 16 floors on the boat, I think 6500 guests were on the boat, 2500 employees too. WOWZERS!

I was delighted by all the sculptures and art on the boat. Don't quote me but there is over $100,000 worth of art that you can buy if you'd like.

I loved the formal dining room. I loved the formal dining room! Anytime I get to sit down at a table with 3 different glasses, spoons, forks, and plates I just melt!

No photo shop here baby! The clouds are so cool on the ocean horizon. They extend up like a mushroom.

This is a bird's eye view of 12 stories above sea level! Carribean water is an entirely different color than our east coast ocean color. We saw a school of baby dolphins, or what looked like baby dolphins.

The boardwalk was a real kid-friendly place to hang-out! They had the different stages of building the horses for the carosel. Face painting, parades, games, non-stop activites, shows, and treats.

I'm confessing that I stumble and need Christ to be my guide.

I'm professing that I'm weak and need His strength to carry on.

My flaws are far too visible, but God believes I am worth it.

I have my share of heartaches, so I call upon His name.

Rarely have I read a book and then seen the movie that I can say were both of the same caliber. I loved this novel and laugh, cried, and cheered in the theatre. Wonderful characters and storyline. A chic-flick you don't want to miss! I have fallen in love with these gals!

Prayer Group

This is how I feel after leaving last night's prayer group (or any prayer time). I feel like a little girl in a beautiful meadow of flowers free to run and spin and bask in the fragrance. Somehow the Lord transforms my heart and soul and mind after spending time in community prayer. All my burdens have been laid at the foot of the cross, my concerns are lifted up, and I have been blessed by that precious time. Only the Lord can wash me of the anxieties of life and suddenly I am lighter and free. Thank you Jesus for that amazing gift!
