White as Snow

They call this kind of snow storm a white-out.

"As I looked, "thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze."  Daniel 7:9

He says to the snow, 'Fall on the earth,' and to the rain shower, 'Be a mighty downpour.'
Job 37:6

"Have you entered the storehouse of the snow or sen the storehouses of the hail,
Job 38:22

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Psalm 51:7
He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes.
Psalm 147:16
The wind blew dramatically and swept up the flakes till it clung to everything.

Matthew 28:3
His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.

As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater.  Isaiah 55:10
Red is set best against a white back-drop.

Like the coolness of snow at harvest time is a trustworthy messenger to those who send him; he refreshes the spirit of his masters.  Proverbs 25:13

lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding,
Psalm 148:8

"Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.  Isaiah 1:18
My snow angel.

Revelation 1:14, His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire.

Just a Sack of Lunch?

Here is a story that has been around the block a few times but it makes me stop and pray for our soldiers and makes me ever so grateful to be an American.

I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight. 'I'm glad I have a good book to read. Perhaps I will get a short nap,' I thought.

Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. I decided to start a conversation.

'Where are you headed?' I asked the soldier seated nearest to me.
'Petawawa. We'll be there for two weeks for special training, and then we're being deployed to Afghanistan

After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack lunches were available for five dollars. It would be several hours before we reached the east, and I quickly decided a lunch would help pass the time...

As I reached for my wallet, I overheard a soldier ask his buddy if he planned to buy lunch. 'No, that seems like a lot of money for just a sack lunch. Probably wouldn't be worth five bucks. I'll wait till we get to base.'
His friend agreed.

I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying lunch. I walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight attendant a fifty dollar bill. 'Take a lunch to all those soldiers.' She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her eyes wet with tears, she thanked me. 'My son was a soldier in Iraq ; it's almost like you are doing it for him.'

Picking up ten sacks, she headed up the aisle to where the soldiers were seated. She stopped at my seat and asked, 'Which do you like best - beef or chicken?'
'Chicken,' I replied, wondering why she asked. She turned and went to the front of plane, returning a minute later with a dinner plate from first class.
'This is your thanks..'

After we finished eating, I went again to the back of the plane, heading for the rest room.
A man stopped me. 'I saw what you did. I want to be part of it. Here, take this.' He handed me twenty-five dollars.

Soon after I returned to my seat, I saw the Flight Captain coming down the aisle, looking at the aisle numbers as he walked, I hoped he was not looking for me, but noticed he was looking at the numbers only on my side of the plane. When he got to my row he stopped, smiled, held out his hand and said, 'I want to shake your hand.' Quickly unfastening my seatbelt I stood and took the Captain's hand. With a booming voice he said, 'I was a soldier and I was a military pilot. Once, someone bought me a lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot.' I was embarrassed when applause was heard from all of the passengers.

Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch my legs. A man who was seated about six rows in front of me reached out his hand, wanting to shake mine. He left another twenty-five dollars in my palm.

When we landed I gathered my belongings and started to deplane. Waiting just inside the airplane door was a man who stopped me, put something in my shirt pocket, turned, and walked away without saying a word. Another twenty-five dollars!

Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering for their trip to the base.
I walked over to them and handed them seventy-five dollars. 'It will take you some time to reach the base. It will be about time for a sandwich.  God Bless You.'

Ten young men left that flight feeling the love and respect of their fellow travelers.

As I walked briskly to my car, I whispered a prayer for their safe return. These soldiers were giving their all for our country. I could only give them a couple of meals. It seemed so little...

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America ' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.'
That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.'

'Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen.'

Of all the gifts you could give a Marine, Soldier, Sailor, Airman, & others deployed in harm's way, prayer is the very best one.

6 Foot Snowman

Snow conditions are just right for creating man today...snowman that is!

Everyone got into the game of making the biggest snow creature on the block!

Those light, fluffy snowflakes can get a bit heavy when all bundled together.

Ready, on my count...

Heave...

Almost, don't drop it...

DON'T give up, you're just about there!

Success!

Okay, I'm thinkin he's gonna need a head.

There we go.

It's our ability to accessorize that separates us from the animals (100 points if you know what movie that is from).

What's shall you name this snow creation?
Fred-reeda!

It's blustery out, a 'white-out' they tell me.  I'm stayin by the roaring fire with me fuzzy socks on chilaxing!

Warmly Yours,
E.W.

Pink Lemonade Shortbread

Due to this week's culinary delights I must go to the gym an extra day or two...or three.  I love shortbread.  I love pink.  I love this new treat that would be just right to serve at a tea party or for Valentine's Day.

Pink Lemonade Shortbread
Crust:
1 1/2 sticks softened butter
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar

Topping:
4 eggs, room temperature
1 3/4 cups sugar
1 Tbsp. freshly grated lemon zest
Juice from 1 whole lemon
1/3 cup flour
1 tsp baking powder
5 drops red food coloring

Heat oven 350 degrees. Line 13x9 with parchment paper.  For the crust beat butter, flour and powdered sugar in mixer until blended (it will be dry and crumbly). Press over the bottom of the pan and bake 15 minutes till golden.  Next in large mixing bowl beat eggs, sugar, lemon zest and juice, flour and baking powder till smooth.  Add about 5 drops of red food coloring till it turns pink.  Pour over hot crust.  Bake another 25 minutes til top is golden and set (a.k.a. no jiggly).  Cool in pan.  Lift parchment paper out and cut into bars.  Dust with confectioner's sugar.

E.W.

Boyz Adventures

I found this group of pictures from last November of my youngest and his best bud.  They were born 1 day apart and have been thick as thieves ever since.

Having lunch on top of the roof shed, scaring off monsters and feeling like King of the Hill!

These guys have gone on vacation together, had birthday parties together, they are on the same soccer team, and the laugh and laugh and laugh when they are together!  One birthday party was a 'Warrior Party.'  We centered it around the idea that they are in God's Army and they are warrior's for Him.  They made TeePee's and wore face paint and feathered head dresses.
Isaiah 13:4 NIV
Listen, a noise on the mountains, like that of a great multitude! Listen, an uproar among the kingdoms, like nations massing together! The LORD Almighty is mustering an army for war.

This hammock sits high in the trees for boyz play and adventure.
I pray their friendship will endure and strengthen as they journey together serving our great God!  I pray they will sharpen each other and be an encouragement to one another.  Proverbs 27:17 NIV
As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.  They have been given a sweet gift of friendship and the treasure of growing up together, just think what memories they will collect over the years!

Coram Deo,
E.W.

Homeschool Pick of the Week

Top Story

Good news for kids!

Incorporating current events into your curriculum can be one of those items that get pushed out of the schedule.  Staying abreast of real news is tricky if you watch TV for your information or read the newspaper.  A reliable resource that I love is World Magazine.  They have news articles for every grade level from Pre-K to adult.  It reports and teaches from a biblical worldview.   Each monthly edition contains editorials, maps, colorful photographs, quizzes and the best part is scripture is laced throughout every page.  I have my daughter read through the magazine each month and answer the questions or fill in the crossword puzzle, or complete the assignments built right into each issue.  Then we talk about what she has read and go over any vocabulary or pieces of the news events that need further discussion.

The Scarf

I was the benefactor of a beautiful gift today.  As I was leaping out of the car (due to being late for drama rehearsals, not mine, my kids) I swung the door shut and there appearing out of no-where is one of my dearest, sweetest friends standing there with NO coat on and her hands behind her back and a Cheshire cat smile upon her dear face.
If I could have bottled her up in that very moment I most certainly would have!
She began talking a mile a minute about, "how she wanted to give me something for Christmas, but it wasn't finished and I had specifically asked if she was working on any new knitting projects (we are knitting buddies) and that she couldn't tell me and she so wanted to hurry and finish it and NOW it was finished, and I hope you like it ...".(she was breathless and I was completely enchanted with whatever it was hiding behind her back)!  She whips this light rasberry-ish funky scarf out and VIOLA' it was on my neck in a New York second!  I absolutely love, love, love it!
Jo is the kind of chick that can tackle any project with gusto.  Last summer she decided to put bead-board in her kitchen.  Hello??  Her favorite store is IKEA, why, because assembly is required!  I run shrieking from things like that.  I need visuals, someone to hold my hand, but not Jo!  We took one knitting class together and she has moved on to making baby sweaters and hats and now this.  Jo is my avid book worm, D.C. trekking, map-oriented, politically engaged, and most tender-hearted woman that I have ever met.  We have been friends since our kiddos were toddlers and have traveled the road of motherhood, wifey-hood, womanhood side by side.  She is the kind of friend that will bail you out of a jam when you are in Hawaii and you find out that one of your children needs a place to hang in between itinerary schedules.  I am blessed to call her friend.  I love ya girl!

Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.  3 John 1:2

E.W.

Ice Berries

My sweetie gave me a snazzy toy for Christmas that I am getting to know day by day.  I have wanted a digital 35mm camera since I have such fond memories of my old black and white one from high school days.  There is just something invigorating about resting a lens in your left palm and getting your glass eye into focus.  Today's cameras are more like mini computers.  Page by page, through a very friendly users guide,  I am learning about my new fellow...he needs a name...
Today, school was closed due to icy conditions.  Ice is fabulous to shoot!  It gives everything a glistening chill.

Beer Bread

With two hungry teenagers devouring everything in site I have had to bulk up our dinner menu.  Forever and a day I have served a meat, a starch, and a bag of steamed frozen veggies.  That is not cutting it anymore so I have had to think of a fourth dinner item.  Beer bread is a snap to throw together.  Because the beer acts as the yeast there is no delay in baking it immediately.  I buy the cheapest 6-pack of beer and tuck it in the pantry for when I want to whip this up.

Beer Bread Recipe
3 cups flour
3 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp salt
3 T sugar
can of beer
2T melted butter
Sift the dry ingredients then add the can of beer, mix.
Pour into greased 9x5 loaf pan and pour melted butter on top.  Bake for about 50 minutes.  You can spruce it up with cheese or garlic salt.

Enjoy,
E.W.

A New Do

Girlfriend got herself a new do!  Bangs, it was the monumental decisions of the day!  I love seeing her big brown eyes!  I remember when she was little we played the song Brown Eyed Girl  by Van Morriason and a week or so later she said, "Mommy will you play that "Eye-brow"  song again!

Her Momma,

The Basement Door

Our basement doors has 5 sheets of paper taped to it.  They change year to year.  We just hung this year's individual goals.  Each person writes up their goals and dreams for the upcoming year.  Here is a sneak at 2011 lists...
I like what big Daddio wrote here about learning to play the drums.  The DRUMS????  Oh, dear...we may have to have a little chat about this, I am hoping he means on Band Hero!

This is yours truly's goals.

This one belongs to the 15 year old.  I like that he wrote he wants to pay attention to his relationships!

Can you see any difference between girls and boys here?  My girl is very introspective and relational!  She wants to serve her grandparents, convert someone to Christianity :) and learn to do a split.  Love it!

And last but not least is the 8 year old writing his personal goals.  One of his goals this year to to light sticks on fire in the outdoor fire pit!  Like father like son...He also wrote that he wants to do things that are unexpected like chores...I love this kid!

These papers serve as reminders and benchmarks for the journey.  We read in Proverbs this morning in our devotional time:

Wisdom rests in the heart of him who has understanding, but what is in the heart of fools is made known.

I love to get a glimpse of what is in my families hearts.  We talked about what is means to have understanding and to have our lives reflect that we do indeed have wisdom.  What we fill our eyes, minds, ears with will show what lies within.  I pray for my kids hearts to be tender towards God, to seek Him and favor His Word.
I pray they will have hearts pliable for the Maker to mold.  I pray they will be sold out for God!

Coram Deo,
E.W.

Say Night-Night

One day he won't want me to tuck him in anymore.  But for right now he still does, and I am so very glad that he does.  He is my third child, the last one to still linger over tuck-in-bed-conversation.  We have a ritual.  Just he and I.  It never changes order.  It follows a nightly pattern of love and security.

KISS

HUG

HOLD YOUR TWO HANDS

SNUGGLE

NOSE-EEz

KISSY BIRD

 TWIDDLEY FINGERS

 WIGGLEY FINGERS

THUMB WAR

BUTTERFLY KISSES

HAIR-EEz

TICKLES
This is the part when I invariably get a knee to the chest or bopped in the chin!

BELLY RUB
This is when a song is requested, usually Froggy Went a Courtin.  Other times I'll sing Day by Day or I Love You Lord or a surprise pick of the night.

PRAY

May  your father and mother be glad; may she who gave you birth rejoice!  Proverbs 23:25

I love you Gabriel!
What does your kiddos night time tuck-in look like?
